Description:
A very large funerary statuette, no less than 31 cm high, made of wood and dating to the New Kingdom, so relatively early and rare, especially in this quality and size.
The figure is depicted mummiform, with only the head and hands protruding from the mummy bandages, the arms crossed over the chest. He has a rather round, very classical face which is finely sculpted, with full, mysteriously smiling lips, prominent cheeks, large almond-shaped eyes and large ears, all executed in relief, as are the fingers. A few traces of polychromy remain on the eyes and mouth. The face is surrounded by a tripartite wig, with two sections falling over the shoulders and the third part, much wider, visible on the back. The style of the face is reminiscent of early New Kingdom statuary.
Dating:
New Kingdom, 18th-19th dynasty, circa 1550 - 1185 B.C.
Size:
Height 31 cm.
Provenance:
English private collection T., acquired in 1953; thence in the possession of a Swiss private collector E.D., who passed away in 1978; thence by descent; with an export license issued by the Ministry of Culture of the French Republic.
Condition:
A few areas of damage, particularly on the proper left hip and on the back, with some age related cracks (expected since this is wood, a vulnerable material), all as shown; this is more than compensated by the extraordinarily beautiful face. Absolutely rare in this size!
